LABELWATCH.com

Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on the back of a food container and wondered what the heck is all that stuff? I recently came across a really helpful website, LABELWATCH.com, that lists the ingredients in packaged food and describes what they are so you are more informed about what you are putting into your body.

Last week I was working on a post about my homemade mac & cheese and I wanted to see the ingredient list for Kraft Mac & Cheese. I looked it up on LABELWATCH.com and voilà, there was a list of color-coded ingredients. The "beneficial ingredients" were highlighted green, the "ok ingredients" yellow, and the "cautionary ingredients" red. When you click on a specific ingredient, you are taken to a page with a description of that ingredient.

Their data base contains over 25,000 food products. If the packaged food you're curious about isn't in their data base, you can use their Ingredient Glossary to look up specific ingredients. The ingredient information is based on scientific data from multiple reliable sources. Thank you LABELWATCH.com for helping us become better informed consumers!

  1. Kendra, so glad you posted this. I am extremely MSG sensitive, which is one of my migraine triggers. It is a flavor enhancer, not a food preservative. It's clearly listed on Campbell's soups and cream-of's. I'm shocked at how companies are now adding this stuff in so many ingredients, and even sneaking it in under other names. Yes, we all now need to read the labels, and then look up what is in each ingredient.
    Thanks for sharing the site.

  4. I hope to download this on my Droid. I try to grow and provide most of my food myself, but there are things that I can't do. This is a most appreciated blog-post. I plan to take it with me shopping.

  5. This is the coolest site. Thank you so much for the exposure. I try and read labels and make better choices, but I'm sometimes looking at the more natural ingredients or the organic and wondering if the stuff is that much better. This is so helpful.

  6. What a great idea! This would be great to share with someone who is trying to make the change to real food and is sittin' on the fence. I have someone in mind!

  8. thank you so much for this website! I made a list of all (potentially)dangerous ingredients (those in red) complete with Enumbers when applicable(i live in the EU and some items on list here are banned) in printable document to bring with me when shopping. I normally avoid all that stuff as I tend to cook from scratch, however it might come handy sometime!
