Yummy Low-Sugar Syrup Alternatives

I stopped buying artificial syrup once I realized it's mostly high fructose corn syrup. I switched to pure maple syrup instead, until I realized it contains more sugar than artificial syrup and have you seen how much it costs?!? Here are some of my favorite syrup alternatives. Put some in a bowl and your kids will love dipping their pancake or waffle.

I wanted to compare the amount of sugar carbohydrates in each of these waffle toppings. I used my kitchen scale to determine how many grams of each item would go on one waffle, and then I calculated the corresponding amount of sugar. As you can see, peanut butter, unsweetened applesauce, and organic yogurt contained the least amount of sugar. I was surprised to see jam at the top of the list.

How many grams of sugar are in each waffle topping?

Sugar (g)Amount of Waffle Topping
16.8 gSmuckers Simply Fruit Strawberry Jam (40 g)
12.6 gTrader Joe's Pure Maple Syrup (20 g)
9.5 gEggo Syrup (20 g)
7.5 gKraft Sour Cream & Natural Cane Sugar (20 g)
4.6 gOrganics Vanilla Yogurt (40 g)
3.6 gTrader Joe's Unsweetened Applesauce (40 g)
2.3 gSkippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (24 g)

I'd love for you to share your favorite syrup alternatives so we can all get more ideas. (It doesn't have to be low-sugar.)

  4. Oooh, thanks for doing this comparison, Kendra! We've stopped using syrup as well. We've done honey, jam, and just fruits. Never thought about yogurt or sour cream! Thanks for the ideas!

  6. We love peanut butter and sliced bananas. I always buy the Kroger brand natural peanut butter that only contains roasted peanuts and salt. I love that it contains no added sugar or oil. These ideas look yummy!

  10. I like homemade chocolate syrup (still has sugar, but no HFCS) or also a homemade berry sauce. Sooo good, takes only a little time. Last week I made it from fresh blueberries and raspberries, a little bit of sugar, water, cinnamon and OJ. Can also make a blintz filling as a topping (my fav!) which is basically a mixture of cream cheese, cottage cheese and vanilla.
I like the idea of experimenting with different toppings!

  11. Thanks for this comparison! I like to use peanut butter (natural) or honey on my waffles. When it comes to pancakes, though, they taste best with syrup! :)

  12. We make our own maple syrup by following the recipe on the Mapleine bottle, but using healthier sugars (Sucanat, Coconut Palm sugar, and I have yet to try Stevia), and additionally we add as much vanilla as Mapleine. My sister makes a syrup by mixing frozen apple juice concentrate with some Mapleine (I believe it's just the two ingredients). We have also made a very yummy apple cider/cinnamon syrup in the past.

  13. We do use maple syrup but don't douse the pancakes in it, just a little drizzle. I also make berry sauce. I like to take about 12oz berries (blueberry, strawberries, raspberries,) 1/3 cup water and a squirt of honey (maybe 1 tbsp) and boil it until slightly thickened. Then I puree it in my food processor or blender. It's great on pancakes or mixed into plain yogurt for flavor or to be really decadent as a topping to ice cream.
