about me

I'm a first grade teacher, turned stay-at-home mom. I have three little boys (husband included) that keep me on my toes. Spare time is a scarce commodity around here. But if I manage it, you'll probably find me curled up with a good book, watching a movie with the hubby, or on the computer researching simple natural alternatives to pricey consumer products, trying them out, and having an abnormal amount of fun blogging about it.

why our homemade happiness

In 2009 my husband got mono and he's just never fully recovered. Walking on a treadmill leaves him exhausted for days. His blood results showed some liver disease, from the Epstein-Barr virus. Since the liver is responsible for filtering chemicals and toxins from the bloodstream, I started to become aware of how many chemicals are in everything we buy, from processed food to household cleaners, lotion, and even air freshener. It's crazy! A lot of people believe this onslaught of chemicals is causing an increase in cancer, asthma, and all sorts of health problems.

I've become inspired to rid my home of as many chemicals as I can, for my family's health. I started Our Homemade Happiness in February 2012 to help others on a similar journey. I hope you'll come along for the ride!

  1. You have inspired me to follow you now! So glad I found this blog. I too get concerned about how many chemicals are in everything we use, plus it gets expensive!

  2. I love that you are doing this for your family. I can tell you love them so very much. And I cannot believe your husband hasn't fully recovered from mono yet- it's amazing what it can do to your body! I am also happy to see that you were a elementary teacher! I majored in education and taught preschool for several years! Like Minds:)

  4. Your story is so similar to my own. My DH has an auto-immune disease, and upon researching found that sometimes chemicals and other toxins can trigger our immune systems to flare and not shut off. We started making many of our own household and personal items as well! Great blog!

  6. I just found your blog today and it has instantly become one of my favorites! Just this past summer I've started along the same path because my husband also was diagnosed with a liver disease, Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis, and we are hoping that eliminating chemicals and toxins will slow down the damage. Thanks for sharing your story, for someone just starting down this path its very inspirational!
